Abstract

An investigation of the homogenisation, mechanical performance and compression after impact strength of Double-Double (DD) laminates is presented. DD laminates are a new layup design approach composed of repeated sub-laminates, comprising two sets of bi-angled plies, ±Ф° and ±Ѱ°. The DD laminate approach simplifies the design of composite structures, reduces manufacturing complexity, and allows for rapid thickness tapering, presenting substantial prospects for reducing structural mass. Updated homogenisation criteria are proposed, aimed at mitigating warpage in DD laminates. These criteria were experimentally validated through laminate manufacture using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) prepreg material. A framework to convert any CFRP laminate to a DD sub-laminate, based on equivalent stiffness, has been developed. Physical testing of both in-plane tensile and flexural specimens, for quad and DD laminates, was carried out to validate the framework. Additionally, low-velocity impact and subsequent compression after impact testing were conducted on quad and DD laminates. Initial findings indicate the potential for a reduced delamination area and increased CAI strength.
