This study, A comparison of Barre and Zumba/Dance Fit on standing leg stability and on the physiological and psychological impact of musical accompaniment on overall movement quality, was conducted in the Movement Innovation Lab at the Physical Education Centre at Queen’s University, Belfast. Using 3D Qualisy motion capture and force platform systems, participants performed a one-legged dynamic balance test to two sound conditions: with musical accompaniment, and using verbal-only cues (without music). A panel of expert evaluators, Sarita Allen, Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre; Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito, creators/owners of CoreBarreFit; Dr Alan Cummins, Project Lead Developer at ARLive Systems; Kedzie Penfield, Analytic Psychotherapist and Counsellor; and Peggy Hackney, EMOVE Institute, were asked to score individual participants’ performances.
