Abstract
The printer Manuel de Sancha (1747-1788), second son of the printer-bookseller Antonio de Sancha (1720-1790) has hitherto failed to receive any critical or bibliographical attention, most probably due to being hidden behind the colossal shadow of the significant entrepreneurial and cultural activity of both his father and his eldest brother Gabriel de Sancha (1746-1820), the most active printer-booksellers during the reigns of Carlos III and Carlos IV. This study examines his limited production as a printer in Madrid during the years 1781-1784, as well as his position in the Sancha entrepreneurial and family dynamics, in which he probably did not fit and from which he tried to escape. At a minor scale, Manuel de Sancha tried to establish himself as an independent printer, but due to bad health and the mediocrity of his production, his efforts were cut short after a few years, and he was obliged to sell all his printing presses and business implements to the Imprenta Real.
