Abstract
Thus commented a contemporary of the remarkable Marie Sallé (1707-1756) upon seeing her performance in the innovative Ballet des Fleurs at the Paris Opéra. Her tercentenary offers us the opportunity to reflect on - and celebrate - the career of one of the most significant dancers ever to have graced the stage. In the first of a two-part article, Sarah McCleave looks back at the ballerina's legacy.
