Abstract

The importance of positive mental health among athletes and sports coaches has received much attention in recent years. However, there has been limited consideration given to the mental health of sports match officials (MOs). This chapter will outline the numerous and unique stressors experienced by MOs within their role and the impact of these stressors on subsequent mental health outcomes. This chapter will also highlight the lack of evidence-informed interventions to support the mental health of MOs. Consequently, we will provide an insight into a recent mental health-focused intervention within association football in England. We will provide a critical reflection on the intervention and present key learnings and implications to inform future mental health support for sports MOs.
