Abstract

The monograph “Mnemonic Structure and Style in Irish Proverbs” by Marcas Mac Coinnigh examines why Irish proverbs endure, arguing that their longevity rests primarily on patterned linguistic form rather than on wisdom alone. It analyses the three major twentieth‑century dialect collections, distinguishing core proverbs from related subforms such as proverbial expressions, comparisons, Wellerisms, enumerative proverbs and questions. The study highlights how syntax, metaphor, personification, alliteration and rhyme interact to create a mnemonic architecture that supports recognition and transmission. In its final part, it explores the social role of proverbs through blasons populaires, showing how regional, often humorous stereotypes reflect cultural identity and literacy.
