Abstract

Several in situ tests for assessing the mechanical, permeation, corrosion and integrity characteristics of concrete in structures were reviewed in the first part of this chapter. The second part focused on sensing techniques, which were classified as electrical or optical. Many researchers worldwide are developing new testing and monitoring systems, and these may have major implications for buildings and civil infrastructure. It has been demonstrated that both site test methods and sensors could be used to monitor the various physical and chemical characteristics of concrete directly related to its durability. There are advantages and disadvantages with each technique, but a combination of techniques could allow a proper maintenance strategy to be developed, saving the huge sums currently spent on repair and rehabilitation and leaving more money for capital development.
