Object oriented supply chain simulation in Flexsim

Abstract

Nature of the supply chain is very complex and dynamic. Because of that, analytical methods are often inappropriate for efficient solving of specific problems in complex supply chain and in these cases, a simulation is an adequate tool. Beside that, the development of the simulation model must be realized according to the specific characteristic of the supply chain. Simulation is traditionally used for strategic analysis (location or/and allocation problems, distribution network planning, determining target performances etc), but nowadays more and more in tactical area (inventory management, manufacturing, material handling or warehousing equipment selection, layout problems etc) and operational analysis (vehicle routing problems, scheduling and other daily activities). There are a large number of simulation tools for supply chain analysis. Some of these tools are internal packages developed and used by a single company, other are commercially available packages (like a Supply Solver, SCOR and e-SCOR, etc) and most of packages are general-purpose simulation languages (like a ARENA, Micro Saint, Flexsim, etc).
Further, chapter 2 gives information on supply chain observed here, defines scenarios and identifies performance measures. Chapter 3 firstly explains basic modelling concepts of used simulation software, and then introduces Flexim objects and accessories. Finally, some examples of simulation results are presented in chapter 4.
