Abstract

Time synchronised sampled values (SV) are being using in the electricity substation environment as the basis for measurement systems underpinning power system protection, operation, and control. Now time synchronized SVs are being discussed in the context of understanding power system phenomena across the wide area. There is particular interest in their use to understand the complexities of the electrical distribution network. On low voltage networks, phasor measurement unit (PMU) technology is proving to be insufficient to describe the complex voltage and current wave shapes. Access to time synchronized SVs is the first step towards developing new measurement algorithms which can be deployed in instruments for such applications. This paper presents an open platform for time synchronized measurements using time synchronized SVs available from both open-source hardware and professional substation equipment alike.
