Abstract

This chapter provides an understanding of the pathological basis for oromucosal disease, changes affecting the oral mucosa, oral cancer, salivary gland disorders, and facial pain. The chapter provides information for Dental Core trainees in oral medicine and for all practitioners presented with these conditions to identify and provide appropriate management. Anatomical variants of normal tissue are explained, investigations used in oral medicine are also described including imaging techniques. It enables readers to provide assessment and examination of the head and neck, prescribe appropriate investigations, and diagnose and manage oral medicine conditions. Diagnosis of common conditions including ulcers, viruses, white and red patches, oral cancer, salivary disease and facial pain are explained.
