Parliamentary accountability and reform

In this chapter, the concept of accountability within democratic systems of government is first examined, with a focus on Westminster-style parliamentary systems. Following this, the principal means through which parliamentary accountability is pursued in the Oireachtas, and their perceived shortcomings, are presented. The chapter then considers the reforms that have been introduced to Dáil Éireann, with an emphasis on those designed to address accountability concerns. A final section details the consequences of the 2016 general election for the manner in which parliamentary accountability is exercised in Dáil Éireann, including financial accountability.
