Abstract

Person-centred care is highly valued in cancer nursing. Furthermore, this approach is increasingly considered an imperative aspect of cancer nursing care, with positive outcomes reported by individuals with a cancer diagnosis, if employed. To support nurses to be empathic with individuals diagnosed with cancer, this chapter provides a personal experience of a cancer diagnosis. The chapter is written by a registered nurse who shares their story from the unusual perspective of being both a healthcare professional and a patient, providing insights into their perspectives of whether they experienced person-centred care. It is hoped this will challenge all clinical nurse specialists to reflect on the care they provide to ensure that it is individualised and holistic.
