Abstract
Plastics are used in a variety of applications because of durability and versatility. However, there are concerns associated with the production and end-of-life of plastics. Plastics consume 7% of world oil production and put pressure on resource supply. Moreover, plastics do not degrade biologically resulting in waste management issues. Within this context, our group focuses on: (1) Studying the scale of the problem and developing plastics flow maps for Northern Ireland; (2) Developing bio-based plastics to decrease use of non-renewable resources; (3) Manufacturing recycled plastics using plastic waste; (4) Performing life cycle assessment of solutions to compare with the baseline; ensuring sustainability in plastics economy.
