Abstract
In spite of a recent turn to creative fansubbing in China, there is a scarcity of research by Chinese scholars on emerging non-conventional styles of subtitles. This chapter identifies both the tight commercial relationship between Hollywood and China and distinctive Chinese spectatorship as bases for exploring the limitations of standard subtitling and the potentials of creative subtitling. In that way, this chapter discusses practice as research as a way of bringing together theory, practice and audience reception.
