Abstract
In this paper I explore a number of curriculum design questions regarding professional doctorates in legal studies. Given likely cohorts, how ought theoretical skills development interact with existing clinical and other professional workplace experience? How ought taught aspects of the curriculum help prepare students for independent research and ought original contributions be understood differently within professional doctoral requirements?
Beyond this, does the professional doctorate model provide opportunities to extend doctoral study to non-traditional candidates? If so, should we expand our notions of what is valued in doctoral study in order to engage more people in scholarly research?
