Radar cross section reduction of scanned array antenna with band-pass frequency selective surfaces

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution

Abstract

In this paper, a method to reduce the radar cross-section (RCS) of a dipole antenna array which is popularly used for active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar is described using the frequency selective surfaces (FSS) and radar absorbing structure (RAS). Reducing the RCS of a radar antenna is the primary goal in attaining stealth performance. A compact band-pass FSS (BPFSS) and the circuit analogue absorber with element size 0.27λX0.27λ is designed at the operating frequency band of dipole antenna (10 GHz) to allow the incoming electromagnetic (EM) wave to pass through it to avoid the reflection. Next, a compact wideband absorber is employed to avoid unwanted reflection from the background. The simulations are performed using the commercial full-wave solver and the results are analyzed. The results are promising and encouraging towards the development of such configuration for modern stealth applications.
