Abstract

This symposium reports on the TESSE evaluation of an ijavascript:void(0);ntegrated violence and abuse prevention programme for children aged 5-11. The Speak Out Stay Safe (SOSS) programme was developed by the NSPCC (National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children) and was delivered by trained staff and volunteers in primary schools across the UK. The matched comparison study included a survey of over 1500 primary school children and integrated process evaluation. The symposium reports key findings that can inform the development of preventive programmes for younger children more broadly.

Takeaway Points:

Theories of change for school-based prevention programmes should take account of the school context in which they are delivered.

External programme providers should prepare teachers adequately and engage them in programme delivery so that messages can be reinforced and embedded post-delivery.

Structured observation can assist programme fidelity and quality and identify gaps in skills and confidence.

Evaluations of prevention programmes should be inclusive of children with special educational needs and disabilities.
