Abstract
New Zealand recently overhauled its system for intellectual property (IP) protection of new varieties of plants. Several requirements now incorporated into the 'Plant Variety Rights Act 2022' (NZ) (PVR Act 2022) are designed to protect Maori rights and interests. These may be relevant to Australian plant breeders and IP practitioners: Watch for similar changes in Australia, certain species are now subject to additional review, Maori relationships to plants are now a factor in the decision to grant plant variety rights, choose names carefully.
