Selective hydrogenation of aromatic carboxylic acids over Pt-Sn catalysts

Research output: Contribution to conferenceAbstractpeer-review

Abstract

Pt-Sn supported on Al2O3 was found to be active for the hydrogenation of benzoic acid importantly exhibiting very high selectivity for the hydrogenation of the carboxylic acid functionality in preference to the aromatic ring.1 A DFT study of the adsorption of benzoic acid on a reduced PtSnOx catalyst showed that the adsorption was favoured through the sigma interaction of the COOH group rather than π interaction of the aromatic ring. Interestingly, hydrogenation of derivatives of benzoic acid showed variation both in rate and selectivity compared to that observed for benzoic acid over Pt-Sn catalysts. While no ring hydrogenation was observed for benzoic acid and derivatives trans-cinnamic acid, phenylacetic acid and 4-methoxybenzoic acid, for 4-chlorobenzoic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid ring hydrogenation products were observed.
