Selective hydrogenation of fatty acids using Pt/TiO2 and Pt-Re/TiO2 catalysts

Research output: Contribution to conferencePosterpeer-review

Abstract

Selective hydrogenation of carboxylic acids to alcohols and alkanes has been achieved under remarkably mild reaction temperatures and H2 pressures (333 K, 5 bar) using Pt/TiO2 and Pt-Re/TiO2 catalysts.

It was possible to tune experimental conditions to selectively produce alkanes for biofuels or fatty alcohols desired.

Fatty alcohols are widely used in cosmetics, lubricants, resins and perfumes, while alkanes are used as bio-diesel. In current industrial practice, extreme high pressures and temperatures are required using toxic copper chromite catalysts at 200-300 bar H2 and temperatures of 433-673 K and controlling selectivity at such conditions becomes difficult.
