Abstract

Virtual Reality experiences often promise an immersive perspective into the lives of others, but often stage disembodied spectatorship. This lab questions the role of VR and digital art through interactive discussion, a creative workshop and live demonstrations of VR works by BeAnotherLab and SARC.

The lab brings together two ongoing projects that share a kindred exploration of Virtual Reality and other digital media as creative methodologies for perspective-sharing and embodiment in the production and dissemination of anthropological knowledge.

The art-science research collective BeAnotherLab will present their award-winning project 'TheMachineToBeAnother'. The project combines VR technology with interaction protocols from neuroscientific research and performance art. TheMachine facilitates the immersive experience of a body swap between two persons in real-time.

Researchers from the Sonic Arts Research Centre will share their participatory methodologies for using immersive digital media (360° video, 3D scanning, VR painting) in arts workshops with newcomer communities in Belfast. These activities explore meaning-making, place-making, identity management and social inclusion with different publics and in contested spaces.

In sharing their methodologies, the two research teams aim to open a discussion around the possibilities of immersive technologies, and how we might use them for the production and dissemination of knowledge in anthropological research.
