Abstract

There is an interest in how social workers make decisions when concerns exist about the well being and safety of children. This paper will present the findings from one part of an international study seeking to better understand what factors influence the decision making of social workers about children’s admission to and return home from state care.
The study involved presenting 200 social work students and 200 qualified child care social workers in Northern Ireland with one of four versions of the same vignette. The four versions of the vignette were distributed randomly. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire rating a number of issues about the case and to provide a rationale for their decisions.
In the analysis the researchers have sought to explore what factors are most likely to influence decision making for practitioners working with children and families in social care in Northern Ireland.
