Abstract

Numerical results for the spin polarisation SP and the scattering asymmetry SA are presented for the elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons from Hg and Tl atoms. The interpretation in terms of the so-called 'fine-structure effect' indicates that spin flips by exchange may represent an important polarisation mechanism, in addition to the conventional Mott scattering process.
