Abstract

This work responds to the theme of “off-the-shelve NIME” We use two MYO (EMG bands) which are commercially available from Thalmic Labs. The work embraces the maturity of the technology and understanding of EMG signals in interactive contexts. The MYO bands are not the theme nor the centre of the work but serve to facilitate a specific narrative and allows for gestural control that would be difficult to achieve with alternative sensing modalities. This live performance work revolves around two narrative figures: a writer and his fictional character. The writer sits at his typewriter attempting to write a story. While struggling to work through the writer’s block, he starts to seek advice from his own fiction – the character from his story. Through the act of writing, he activates the character and triggers her to move, think and recall memories from her fictional past.
