Abstract
Between August 2017 to December 2018, the Research Group of Waking the Feminists Northern Ireland (WTFNI) undertook a survey of eight Northern Irish theatre companies in receipt of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's Annual programme funding. Using the original template of the Waking the Feminists 'Gender Counts' Report (2016; Donohue et al), the survey covered a period of five years (2014-2019). It recorded the frequency of gender representation in seven key creative roles (Author, Director, Actor, Lighting, Sound, Costume and Set Designer and Cast) in productions that met the survey's criteria.
This report presents and analyses much needed data into gender inequality within Northern Ireland's theatre sector. It also makes recommendations in the light of the existential threat and potentialities that the Covid 19 pandemic presented to the arts sector in the past two years. In presenting this report, the research group hope to forge new initiatives to promote gender parity on the island of Ireland and beyond.
