title = "The making or breaking of the Queensland Biodiscovery Act",
abstract = "The Queensland Government recently released the 'Statutory Review of the Biodiscovery Act 2004 and Government Response', and has undertaken the first round of consultations and feedback. A statutory review is mandated every 5 years, although the 2009 Review did not culminate in any significant changes to the law. Noting the conclusion of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity (Nagoya Protocol) and other changes to the policy environment since then, the 2016 'Statutory Review of the Biodiscovery Act 2004 (Queensland)' provided a total of 45 recommendations. The government response indicated agreement with 30 recommendations, and agreed in principle with the other 15 recommendations. Additional feedback, policy analysis and stakeholder consultations will be undertaken before any proposed amendments are tabled.",
