Abstract

The wavefunction and binding energy are calculated for the outer 6p electron in the negative ion of Yb- 4f146s26p. This ion belongs to the recently discovered group of negative ions (Ca-, Sr-, Ba-, Ra-) which are formed by the atoms wich closed subshells due to their large dipole polarizabilities. The ab initio calculations, performed using the Dyson equation method, yield 98.5 meV for the 6p binding energy. The fine structure 2P3/2-2P1/2 splitting for Yb- is estimated at 77 meV. The cross section and photoelectron angular distribution asymmetry parameter for Yb- photodetachment are calculated.
