The purpose of this paper is to cast light on the ethical dilemma in research on new religious movements. By sketching the diverging viewpoints and the implications of ethics in social sciences, it aims to contribute to a "sociology of the sociology of religious movements", a necessary process, which intends to be guided by the exigencies of scientific research and the respect for the individuals who render possible the furtherance of knowledge.
