Towards combating intellectual property infringements in Nigeria: challenges and prospects

Abstract

Intellectual property is a creation of human mind that gives a proprietary interest to the author. These rights are created and protected by different laws against all forms of exploitation that amount to infringement. The infringement of intellectual property has negative effects on creations/inventions and that is why the law protects intellectual property against same. There are several ways and methods of combating intellectual property infringements in Nigeria, which is our jurisdiction of focus. This paper discusses how the various agencies combating intellectual property infringements have fared in this regard, highlights their challenges and recommends for improvements ways to meet international best practices. The paper also discusses the various means of enforcing intellectual property rights in Nigeria, its successes and drawbacks.
