Abstract

This essay considers the song-writing aesthetic developed by protest singer Gerhard Gundermann, whose work started in the GDR and ended in united Germany, from a music-based as well as a personal, i.e., experiential perspective. The text helps contextualize the interview with Laila Stieler, who wrote the script for Andreas Dresen’s2018 film devoted to Gundermann. In her interview, published in English in this volume for the first time, she talks about her experience in the making of this film.
