Voided urine polyamines in bladder cancer

Transitional cell bladder carcinoma (TCC) tumor markers may be valuable in screening, following up recurrences or predicting tumor aggressiveness. A reliable marker obtained from voided urine is not currently available. Polyamines are intracellular basic cell components which are essential for cell proliferation and differentiation. Polyamine concentration is raised in rapidly growing tissues such as tumor. We measured polyamine levels in voided urine to determine if they are elevated in TCC patients and if these levels vary between TCC grades. Voided urine samples were provided by 65 patients with TCC and 60 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Free levels of three polyamines (cadaverine, putrescine and spermine) were measured in all samples using high performance liquid chromatography. Voided urine polyamine levels correlate well with bladder tumor presence and grade. Measurement of polyamine levels in voided urine may be an effective noninvasive method for diagnosing or monitoring patients with suspected or proven bladder cancer.
