Abstract

Waking The Titanic is a 52 min film. Currently on Netflix, this TV/Film documentary that charts the story of the Addergoole 14, a group of fourteen young people from the small townland of Addergoole in Co Mayo, West of Ireland who were emmigrating Ireland to find better lives in USA. Little did they know what lay ahead of them as they boarded their emmigration ship – Titanic. Through the Addergoole 14 the documentary tells the little known story of Titanic’s steerage passengers. The narrative parallels the story of the Addergoole 14, as they prepare to emigrate documenting Irish emmigration rituals and practices, with the story of Titanic being built and prepared for its maiden voyage in Belfast.

The film was commissioned by TG4 and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) and explores how language and translation impact, alter, and steer narrative expression. The film was produced for TG4 in the Irish language and for International distribution in English. Rather than simply translate the film was remade (made separately for both versions). They share some archive footage and some of the shots and images filmed for the film while being cast with different characters and contributors, both films are the same whilst at the same time being very different.

The Irish language version is titled 'Muintir Maigh Eo ar an Titanic' and can be seen on last broadcast on TG4 in 2023, while the English version was distributed internationally, broadcast numerous territories globally, and is currently on streaming globally on Netflix.
