Wie definieren und erleben Kinder und Jugendliche Respekt? Eine partizipative Exploration

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

In this contribution, I illustrate the participatory methodology of RADICAL (‘Respect and Disrespect in Children's and Adolescents' Lives’) - a multi-facetted mixed-methods research study undertaken with children and young people in Northern Ireland. This study involved children and young people in all aspects of this research from the beginning, including the original generation of the research idea, the design of the research instruments, data collection and analysis, and dissemination of the study’s results. The study was informed by the Lundy Model of Child Participation.
The chapter begins with a systematic contextualisation of existing adult-centred theories of respect and how children and young people are seen withing these. The chapter then depict the RADICAL study’s own conceptual approach, which is grounded in the New Sociology of Childhood alongside its child-rights-based focus.
The study began with philosophical workshops with the aim to conceptualise respect and disrespect from the children’s and young-people’s perspectives. Two large-scale representative surveys, in-depth interviews, as well as interactive group discussions were informed by these conceptualisations of respect and disrespect.
The chapter concludes with a discussion of opportunities and challenges of the unique context in which the study was undertaken
