Abstract
Reacting to the EU Council's supplementary negotiation directives on "Brexit" and in particular the specific situation of Ireland, the blog post analyses the legal hurdles for achieving the commitments made by the EU and UK negotiators in December 2017 (avoiding a hard border, guaranteeing effectively rights of Irish citizens in Northern Ireland, and ensuring that no diminution of rights in Northern Ireland ensues from the UK's departure from the EU). It concludes that solutions to overcome these hurdles are still to be developed.
