Abstract


The demand for increased communication bandwidth is growing dramatically, driven by the massive growth in electronic devices, internet technologies and applications. Effective solutions are urgently needed to upgrade current systems cost-effectively, such as Passive Optical Networks (PONs). Increasing transmission bit rates in PONs requires a new solution for modulating/detecting data to replace the current systems using directly modulated lasers whose bandwidth is challenging to increase due to high chirp. A compact and low-cost optical modulator with high modulation speed becomes essential, however available modulators in the market are either expensive, have a large footprint, and/or operate at high drive voltage.
