Abstract

The aim of this work was to investigate possible links between AP and cardiovascular disease risk. The objectives were: (i) to determine the prevalence and extent of AP among men enrolled in the Prospective Epidemiological Study of Myocardial Infarction (PRIME) study in Northern Ireland, while also investigating the possible links between apical periodontitis and systemic inflammation; (ii) to determine if AP was associated with dysbiosis in subgingival dental plaque, and determine which bacterial species were most prevalent, and whether the host immune response was pathogen specific; (iii) to investigate potential links between apical periodontitis and both coronary heart disease (CHD) and all-cause mortality in this group of middle-aged to older men.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 December 2028.
