Abstract
Antibiotic resistance is an existential threat to human health and modern medicine. It is crucial to keep discovering new antibiotics and novel antibiotic targets. It is also necessary to better understand how antibiotics interact with their targets, to make better drugs. This thesis focusses on two known antibiotic targets: menaquinone and lipid II. This thesis describes chemistry to achieve novel isoprenyl quinone probes and the utilisation of these probes to further the understanding of menaquinone as an antibiotic target. This thesis also describes work towards a novel synthesis of lipid II which can be used for antibiotic discovery purposes.
