GDM increases the risk of maternal and infant morbidity. Worldwide, GDM affects 14% of pregnancies. In the UK, approximately 16 out of every 100 women develop GDM. Around 50% of women who had GDM will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years postpartum. Risk factors for GDM include ethnicity, maternal age and family history of diabetes along with modifiable risk factors including smoking, poor diet, obesity and excess weight gain during pregnancy.
