Abstract
Sadu, a traditional form of weaving in Qatar, holds a significant place in the nation’s cultural heritage and has been used to create items such as carpets, furniture, bags, and tents. However, the art form faces a growing threat of decline due to limited engagement with younger adults. This research aims to revive and elevate the status of Sadu weaving, which is currently showcased only during special official occasions, by reintegrating it as a prominent element of Qatari heritage for future generations. The study focuses on making Sadu weaving accessible and appealing to the youth through innovative methods, particularly game-based learning. A Virtual Reality (VR) game created and developed through this research aims to preserve and teach the tradition, helping participants understand the development of traditional Sadu designs, colours, icons, shapes, and patterns. By guiding students through various weaving techniques in an interactive game environment, the study aims to equip them with the skills to complete a Sadu weave in a real-life setting after completing the game. This research highlights the transformative potential of VR and game-based learning in preserving and revitalising Qatar’s cultural heritage. By offering an engaging and immersive platform, it successfully bridges the gap between cultural preservation and modern education, drawing the interest of younger adults. The findings show that VR games are highly effective in boosting motivation, developing skills, and enhancing cultural awareness.Narrative-driven design and gamification strategies, in particular, have proven instrumental in maintaining engagement and encouraging experiential learning. Adding features like adaptive learning systems and real-time feedback mechanisms could further personalise the experience, enhancing both user engagement and learning outcomes. In addition to technological considerations, the study explores the socio-cultural impact of reviving Sadu weaving. It examines how the craft can foster a sense of identity and community among younger adults while addressing its economic potential. By exploring modern adaptations and innovations, the research highlights how Sadu weaving can create new opportunities for artisans and sustain its relevance in contemporary society. Ultimately, this practice-based project aims to ensure that the tradition of Sadu weaving not only survives but thrives in the digital age, securing its place as a vital part of Qatar’s cultural heritage.
