Abstract

CO2 is one of the most important greenhouse gases leading to severe environmental issues. The increase of CO2 emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels has received much research attention. One promising solution to reduce the impact of CO2 is to integrate CO2 capture and utilization (ICCU), which shows many advantages compared to traditional separated CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) processes. The ICCU process shortens the path of CO2 utilization such as CO2 transportation and storage and further negates the need for the purification of products owing to the high conversion of CO2. This thesis focused on exploring new ICCU applications and developing novel multifunctional materials to effectively implement this concept.

Firstly, the integrated CO2 capture and methanation using Ru/CeO2-MgO with various CeO2 morphologies at intermediate temperatures was studied. Subsequently, the high temperature ICCU was investigated using CaO-alone. Sequentially, the selective hydrogenation of carbonates was achieved using K promoted CaO in ICCU. Lastly, a calcium chemical dual looping process was proposed using one-pot sol-gel synthesized Ca-Fe dual functional materials (DFMs).
This thesis investigated the ICCU process in a wide temperature range and referential material systems, which could provide fundamental understandings and references for future ICCU research and industrial deployment of this process.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2026.
