Maternal diabetes and offspring use of dental services: Northern Ireland national cohort study

Abstract

The PhD Research explores the relationship between maternal diabetes during pregnancy and the oral health of offspring. The study analysed administrative data on children born in Northern Ireland and their use of dental services. It aimed to understand if children of mothers with diabetes exhibited different patterns of dental service utilisation over several years. The research found potential associations between maternal diabetes and oral health, particularly when examining specific teeth and the timing of treatment. The study highlighted the importance of early preventive services and regular dental check-ups in improving long-term dental health for children. Overall, the findings suggest the need for targeted preventive interventions and emphasise the significance of maternal health during pregnancy in influencing children's oral health.
