This thesis is an analysis of place-names in a number of parishes in Mid-Ulster. The key aim of the research project is to use evidence to work out the original meaning of the names. The thesis also discusses the decline and survival of the Irish language in Co. Derry and Co. Tyrone as well as the impact of settlement on language contact and language shift. It is clear that a number of geographical, historical, religious and political influences shaped the naming process in the area. The thesis discusses these influences in depth.
