Modelling the impact of variability in fabrication, assembly, and installation of floating wind turbines: a focus on base port operations

Student thesis: Doctoral Thesis › Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract

Offshore wind energy is rapidly expanding, but logistical challenges and supply chain constraints continue to drive up project costs and risks, particularly for emerging floating wind technologies. These challenges are influenced by factors such as infrastructure limitations, resource availability, and environmental conditions, which can lead to project delays and increased uncertainty. This research explores the potential of simulation-based approaches to better understand and manage supply chain variability in floating offshore wind projects. It focuses on identifying key requirements and bottlenecks in both onshore and offshore operations, with particular attention to infrastructure, resource allocation, and the impact of uncertainty. By developing a flexible modelling framework, the study aims to support decision-making in project planning and execution, helping stakeholders reduce delays, optimize resource use, and improve overall supply chain performance. The findings contribute to the broader effort of making floating offshore wind more cost-effective and resilient as the industry scales.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2026.
