Student thesis: Doctoral ThesisDoctor of Philosophy

Abstract

This portfolio is comprised of ten original compositions which explore a wide spectrum of style, artistic interests and mediums, all of which display the progression of my compositional voice over the course of the PhD studies. This body of work consists of five musical scores, one acousmatic piece and four audiovisual compositions. All ten pieces are linked through the utilisation of embedded and performative improvisation, as well as the consideration of narrative in the early stages of generating material.

This supplementary commentary endeavours to outline the context of each piece through a general overview of the portfolio and the conceptual frameworks within. A summary of each piece will be outlined, followed by an overview of my harmonic language, use of improvisation and organisation, programmatic context and finally, a chapter on the audiovisual domain, addressing the methodologies utilised in the portfolio.
