Abstract

This submission comprises a portfolio of eleven compositions, written and edited over a period between 2013 and 2017. These compositions represent the majority of my output as a composer over these years, and focus on exploring several compositional concerns that lie at the heart of this thesis. The total duration of the portfolio can be estimated to be around 88 minutes, since the majority of the compositions have received performances. Due to natural tempo variations and occasional quasi-aleatoric sections where tempi or repeats may be at the performer's discretion, this cannot be taken as gospel.

N.B. This portfolio of compositions was left substantially complete, along with diverse fragmentary writings, at the time of the candidate’s untimely death. The compositions were submitted largely as they had been left, in some cases less than fully complete - but the accompanying writings were completed and organized by the candidate’s supervisor, Professor Piers Hellawell – as is made clear within the volume of commentaries. Editing of the written materials was then provided by the candidate’s friend and contemporary Dr Ciaran Kennedy.
