Reconstructing border pipes: an interdisciplinary (practical and historical) study

Abstract

The historical record suggests the existence of a type of bagpipe distinct from Northumbrian small-pipes, Irish Union pipes and great Highland bagpipes, which occupied a geographical and musical territory between these instruments. This study begins by tracing the repertoire and historical development of Border pipes, drawing on manuscripts, printed collections and accounts of players and makers. Following this, extant instruments are documented through both traditional and modern techniques, capturing details of construction which are translated into technical drawings and 3D models. Building on this foundation, the research expands from analysis to practice, developing and testing a new design for Border pipes. The aim is a historically grounded yet forward-looking model, affording possibilities for both early repertoire and contemporary performance. This study aims to answer key questions about how Border pipes can be distinguished from other bagpipes of the British Isles, what continuities and divergences exist between historical and revival instruments and whether a historically informed model can be proposed that remains faithful to the past while adaptable for present use. As the author is both a player and a maker, the study is as much practical as historical. Its purpose is not only analytical but also persuasive, directed in part to contemporary makers, in order to draw attention to the longer historical context of the Border pipes and to promote designs that preserve their distinctive identity while supporting future performance.
