Abstract
This thesis explores a dialogue between Shakespeare and Pakistan through an investigation of Shakespearean interventions in the country’s cultural history. It focuses on Pakistan’s performing arts, specifically theatre and cinema, and literature. It situates Shakespeare in – and – Pakistan historically stating that interpretations and presentations of Shakespeare in the country cannot be disassociated from Pakistan’s social, cultural and political contexts.Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2028.
