Although a synthesis of adamantane was first proposed in 1924 the first sample was not isolated until 1933 when Landa successfully extracted it from Czechoslovakian petroleum. Subsequent to this however relatively little study was done on the chemistry of adamantane mainly because of its lack of availability. After many attempts to perform a rational synthesis the first successful entry into the tricyclo decane skeleton was made by Bottger who synthesised by a cyclisation of Meerwein 's ester.
