Abstract

Di-O-alkylmonothiophosphates were first prepared by Carius (1) in 1861. He prepared di-O-ethylmonothiophosphoric acid, (C2H50)2POSH, and its salts by two methods.
1. The action of ethanol on P2S5.

2. Saponification of the triethyl ester (C2H50)3PS.

Pistscnimuka (2) prepared several di-O-alkylmonothiophosphates by the second method of Carius, but he reported that they were insoluble in water. As one of the striking properties of the compounds is
now known to be their very great solubility in water (4), there must be some doubt about the compounds he had obtained.

Emmett and Jones (3) prepared sodium di-O-methylthiophosphate by the action of sodium methoxide on the trimethyl ester (CH30)3PS, and by the action of sodium methoxide (4 moles) on thiophosphoryl
chloride (1 mole). They investigated the reactions of its aqueous solution with dilute aqueous solutions of various inorganic reagents, e.g. CuS04, which gave a pale green precipitate and FeC13 which gave
an orange colouration, slightly deeper on boiling.
