Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to investigate the pharmaceutical application of a range of synthetic wax esters, namely Syncrowax™ BB4, ERLC, HGLC and HRC. Thermogravimetric analysis of the four grades showed that the materials were thermally stable at operating temperatures up to l 50°C. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies of the waxes demonstrated broad melting endotherms that provide an indication of their complex chemical compositions. Rheological analysis of the molten waxes illustrated the relatively viscous nature of the HGLC grade, while all the samples were found to behave as Newtonian fluids above their melting point.
